Cable management for twelve telescope antennas at the radio observatory

For twelve telescope antennas, we designed two cable carriers per telescope, for the polar axis and the declination axis, carrying 131 cables per telescope. Cable entries seal the transition to the electrical building.

01 · Challenge

Challenge

At a radio observatory, everything revolves around precision. The twelve telescope antennas capture signals from the farthest corners of the universe. The 'backbone' of these installations consists of 131 highly sensitive cables per telescope, responsible for transmitting data and power. The big challenge here was freedom of movement: the antennas must be able to rotate continuously about both the polar axis and the declination axis to remain pointed at exactly one point in space. Within the limited space of the telescope structure, we had to find a solution that absorbs these complex rotations without twisting or damaging the cables.

Solution

As exclusive partner of Tsubaki Kabelschlepp, we drew on decades of experience in the most demanding sectors. We designed two specific cable carriers for each telescope. The first carrier absorbs the movement of the polar axis, while the second serves the declination axis. Because of the high demands on stability and the need for compact installation dimensions, we chose a configuration in which the cables are guided efficiently through the carriers and then run directly to the central electrical building. Our focus was on engineering that takes into account the minimum bending radii of the 131 different cables, preventing signal loss or breakage due to metal fatigue.

Result

The result is an extremely reliable system in which the cable carriers act as the safe guide for all data and power flows. The cables now move smoothly with the telescope, regardless of the antenna's position. For the critical transition to the electrical building, we supplied high-quality cable entry systems that provide a perfect seal against dust and moisture. Thanks to this piece of Wisman Techniek craftsmanship, the telescopes can gaze into space trouble-free for years to come. Are you looking for a solution for complex movements yourself?
