Cable carriers and scheduled maintenance for Wienerberger's transfer cars

In Wienerberger's brickworks, transfer cars travel long distances through the hall to move bricks between the stages of the production process. Each car carries drive, control and safety systems, and all the cables and hoses for them have to follow the car along the full travel length.

Several things come together here. The travel lengths are long, so the cable carrier partly rests on itself and has to keep running straight and smoothly over a long distance. A brickworks is dusty and hot, and the installation runs almost continuously. Every fault on a transfer car holds up production. So the need was not only for a good carrier, but also for someone to keep it in good condition.

We started with engineering: the travel length, the speed of the cars and the cable package with power, control and data cables and air hoses. For the long travel lengths, we chose cable carriers from Tsubaki Kabelschlepp with rollers, running in a steel guide channel. This lets the upper run glide over the lower run without wear, even over long distances.

On the car, the carrier connects via a swivelling connection, so the cables can follow the movements of the car without kinking. Inside the carrier, every cable and hose has its own place. Our fitters carried out the installation of the channels and carriers in the factory.

Since then, we have been involved with scheduled maintenance and inspection. We periodically check the carriers, the rollers, the channel, the connections to the cars and the cables themselves. We deal with wear before it becomes a breakdown, and we plan replacements in consultation with production.
