Cable carrier wearing quickly?Look at the movement and the environment.

Every carrier wears, but if that happens within a short time, the carrier does not suit the movement or the environment. Spotting wear in time and removing the cause saves a machine from standing still.

Cable carrier in a machining centre with chips

Do you see play or loose parts? Plan an inspection before the carrier breaks and takes the cables with it.

Symptoms

Do you recognise this?

  • Worn side plates or sliding surfaces
  • Play in the hinges
  • Plastic debris under the carrier
  • Discolouration or brittleness of the material

You can check this yourself

  • Where is the wear: side, underside or hinges?
  • Is the environment dirty, hot or wet?
  • Does the carrier glide over a channel or over itself?
  • How many movements per day does the machine make?

Causes

What it is usually down to

Often several causes play a role at once. We look at the carrier, the installation and the movement together.

Let us take a look Do you already know which part is broken? Request it straight away
  1. 01Rubbing or snagging

A carrier that chafes against the machine, the trough or another carrier visibly wears faster at that spot.

  2. 02Gliding without a suitable surface

With gliding arrangements the surface determines how fast the carrier wears.

  3. 03Environment

Swarf, abrasive dust, heat, UV and chemicals attack plastic. In that case an enclosed or steel version is better.

  4. 04Overloaded

A carrier running at the limit of its load wears faster in the hinges.

Step by step

Fix it yourself

Have a fitter in house and want to do it yourself? This is the order we follow too.

What you need

  • Torch
  • Photos of the wear spots

Safety first. Only work on a machine that is stationary, de-energised and locked out against switching on. Secure axes that can move or drop. Follow your company's safety rules.

  1. (01)

    Mapping wear spots

See where the wear is: underside, side or hinges. That points to the cause.

  2. (02)

    View environment

Are there swarf, coolant, heat or sunlight near the carrier? Note what you see.

  3. (03)

    Cleaning

Remove dirt and chips from carrier and channel. Abrasive paste of dirt and chips speeds up wear.

  4. (04)

    Replacing individual parts

Worn glide shoes or links can be replaced individually, as long as the rest is still good.

When to stop

Is the carrier brittle, discoloured or worn in many places at once? Then the material does not suit the environment and a different series is needed.

Solution

Prefer to have it fixed? This is how we do it

Not just replacing, but making sure it does not happen again.

01Inspection
With RupsInspect we record the condition of every carrier and see when replacement is needed.
02Remove the cause
Aligning, a channel or glide strips prevent abrasion.
03Suitable version
A closed, steel or heavier series for heavy environments and loads.
